The Federal Office in Germany has been conducting the procedure for admitting Jewish immigrants from the former Soviet Union and its successor states since 2005.
Me and my parents emigrated to Germany from Yalta, Crimea. We arrived at the initial reception center for refugees in Unna-Massen from where we were assigned to the city of Krefeld. My parents live there ever since. I left and moved to Dortmund in order to study photography at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts.
My mother was born 1977 in Minsk, Belarus. My father was born 1964 in Stepanawan, Armenia.
In general, the book provides insight into my personal thoughts and feelings regarding family, migration, ethnicity, living in a diaspora and, in essence, how to deal with the struggle of finding your identity in the midst of clashing cultures.
The concept of book is to visualize the listed themes by using diverse photographic material. Firstly, I used my own photographs. Secondly, archival pictures of my family are presented and lastly, images from google are utilized for insight into present day Crimea and Armenia, since it is not easy to visit those countries for me, at the moment.
